Chongqing, 05 April 2024 – The Philippine Consulate General, in collaboration with the United Filipinos in Chongqing (UFC) and the Chongqing Filipino Teachers (CQFT), staged a poetry reading at a local pub on the occasion of the Philippine National Literature Month, with the theme Ang Panitikan at Kapayapaan (Literature and Peace).

In her opening remarks, Consul General Flerida Ann Camille P. Mayo recalled the cause for theannual celebration which dates back to 2015 in line with the constitutional mandate to “popularize the Nation’s historical and cultural heritage and resources, as well as artistic creations”.  The Consul General shared her thoughts on the question of lyrics as poetry, citing the lyrical masterpieces of beloved Filipino composers such as George Canseco.  “As we celebrate National Literature Month, we acknowledge the power of both written and spoken word in shaping ideas and attitudes. Let us hope that this year’s theme of Literature and Peace finds resonance in a world beset by armed conflict,” Consul General Mayo said.

The poetry reading featured Jose Corazon de Jesus’ BawatPuso’y may Gunita, Bawat Labi ay may Tula and Dr. Jose Rizal’s Awit ni Maria Clara as rendered by Arthur Jimenez and Ferdinand Miguel, respectively.  Ms. Kathrina Andres also read a piecewritten by her husband, Marlon Andres, entitled Ako’y Pilipino Saan Dako man ng Mundo, which spoke to the profound love of an overseas Filipino worker for their homeland.

The attendees, mostly Filipinos teaching English in local schools, appreciated the National Literature Month as an occasion to preserve their Filipino heritage and strengthen their common Filipino roots.

The National Literature Month is an annual celebration observed in April pursuant to Proclamation No. 968 signed in 2015 to promote Philippine literature and its invaluable contribution to the nation’s cultural tapestry.
